In the engineering curriculum, second-year students in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Metallurgy and Materials Engineering, and Aerospace Engineering are taught about the strength of materials, solid mechanics, basic structures, engineering elastic body mechanics, and the mechanical behaviour of materials. The core of these topics is material testing of metals and alloys. Students are exposed to tension and compression tests, torsion tests, hardness tests, and impact tests on metals and alloys, along with other strength-ofmaterials experiments. However, no book in the area provides comprehensive coverage of these topics, including the associated mechanical properties. The present book provides indepth knowledge of these topics, including the associated properties of materials. The chapters also include short viva voce questions with answers, helping students answer in viva examinations as well as in selection committee interviews. These questions are very popular in viva examinations. The book will be useful to UG and PG students as well as to research scholars.

Prof. N.D. Mittal is a former Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT), Bhopal, where he served for over four decades and retired in 2021. He holds a B.E. in Mechanical Engineering, M.Tech. in Stress and Vibration Analysis, and Ph.D. in Stress Analysis.

His areas of specialization include Mechanics of Materials, Stress and Vibration Analysis, and Finite Element Method (FEM). He has guided 9 Ph.D. theses, 130 M.Tech. dissertations, and numerous undergraduate projects, and has published around 125 research papers in reputed journals and conference proceedings.

He has authored Engineering Mechanics Laboratory Manual (2005), Advanced Mechanics of Materials (2023), and Theory of Vibrations of Advanced Systems, including Basic Concepts (2024). At MANIT, he taught several core subjects and served as In-charge Director, Dean (Academic), and In-charge Registrar.

He has contributed to academic and professional bodies including UPSC, NBA, DRDO, and NAAC, and has been associated with IEI, CSI, ISTE, ISTAM, and ISME. He has also contributed to curriculum development, academic reforms, accreditation activities, and online education initiatives. He continues to remain actively engaged in academics, accreditation activities, and scholarly writing.
