This book offers a detailed, engaging introduction to rocks, minerals, and fossils, designed for students and enthusiasts alike. Covering 225 carefully selected specimens, it explains key properties- hardness, streak, luster, fracture, and density- with clarity and precision. Each entry includes classification, unique highlights, and fascinating facts, making learning both informative and enjoyable. Organized into two major sections- Rocks & Minerals and Fossils- the book provides well-structured explanations supported by clear illustrations. Complex geological concepts are simplified into lucid descriptions, ensuring easy understanding for beginners. Ideal for undergraduate students across Indian universities, it aligns with academic requirements while remaining compact and concise. Civil engineers, geology aspirants, and curious readers will find this text a valuable reference for both classroom learning and fieldwork. With its student-friendly style and technical accuracy, this book transforms geology from a daunting subject into a captivating journey. Explore how the Earth’s fundamental materials shape our world- and uncover the stories locked inside every stone and fossil

Dr. Ramu Baadiga is currently serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Indore. His academic and research experience spans multiple subdisciplines, including Geotechnical Engineering, Geosynthetic Engineering, Pavement Geotechnics, Ground Improvement, AI– ML applications in Geotechnical Engineering, Nature-Inspired Geotechnics, and related areas. He is a life member of several professional bodies, including the Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) and a member of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), the Indian Chapter of the International Geosynthetics Society, the Indian Roads Congress (IRC), and the Institution of Engineers (India). He also serves as a technical committee member of the ISSMGE in the areas of Sustainability in Geotechnical Engineering and Transportation Geotechnics.

Bodhanam S Praveen is a Doctoral Research Scholar in the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Indore. His research focuses on sustainable  materials, geosynthetic-reinforced flexible pavements, carbon footprint, and life-cycle assessment of transportation infrastructure.

Polisetti Sai Meghana, a Junior Research Fellow at IIT Indore, works in the field of pavement geotechnics and sustainable construction materials. Both authors are actively engaged in experimental and analytical investigations integrating advanced material characterization with environmental impact assessment for nextgeneration infrastructure.

Anurag Sinha, Anuj Pal, and Kankipati Sai Sumanth are undergraduate scholars at the Indian Institute of Technology Indore with a keen interest in geotechnical materials, rock mechanics, and applied geological studies.  They have made significant contributions to the laboratory characterization, specimen preparation, and data interpretation presented in this book. Their collective enthusiasm and attention to detail have added valuable academic depth and clarity to the topic of Rocks and Minerals.
